General Grow Media Advice

by Marc
(Castle Rock, CO)

I am setting up an Aquaponics system utilizing multiple types of hydroponic systems (Ebb & Flow, Deep water Cult, NFT...). I want to grow Lettuce, Carrots, Basil and as much as I can possibly get from my garden. Is there data to show what vegetation grows best under what hydro system? Thanks, Marc

Answer: Marc- most hydroponic systems are capable of producing great results when growing a wide variety of different crops. Leafy crops, such as lettuce, spinach, and herbs, are not picky and can be grown easily in any hydroponic system. Root crops, such as carrots, beats, and radishes, should not be grow in standing water (such as a deep water culture system)....these crops do better in a flood and drain system or wick/NFT system. The same would be true for any crop sensitive to having the roots too wet (such as strawberries). Once you have taken these few things into consideration, you are really free to try to grow your plants using any system that would be appropriate. I hope this helps!
