Your Homemade Hydroponic System Recommendations Need an Update

by cra
(FL)

In your homemade systems pages, you show a bucket system using a coiled garden hose for the water sprayer. Given that most hydro gardeners are doing it for the health benefits, I think you should mention that "an old garden hose" is likely to be rated unhealthy by California state standards.

In fact, there is a CERTAIN (and more expensive) type of hose that is rated adequate for drinking water and it's the kind that is used to supply boats and RVs with their drinking water. There's no point in growing organic/hydroponic vegetables if you're getting lead and carcinogens from them.

Just a tip, cra

Answer: Thank you very much for bringing that to my attention. In various places on my site, I do describe the possible danger associated with using bone meal, blood meal, soft plastic containers for a nutrient reservoir, and even toxic commercial fertilizers that contain all sorts of heavy metals, but I was not aware of this particular problem. I will be sure to make the information available in my article as soon as I get a chance! Thanks again, and Happy Growing!
